RE: Dave and the tree - a cautionary tale (long)

I got one for ya. We bought our first RV, a used TT in 2002. We live on a small, almost 1 lane road. Brought it 50 mi home. Had a car behind me and was trying to hurry and get out of the road. Not use to pulling a 30' trailer I cut too short and heard a crunch noise and hit the brakes. Crunched about 18" gash in the side as I hit our mailbox. Broke the mailbox post. Got the TT put up and DW came home a little later. She came in and ask "did we get any mail"? I ask why. She said "I couldn't find the mailbox". :R

RE: Oops, go back to sleep!

MoparDan...I have done it too. Be sure to keep a close eye on your bed rails!!! That happened to me a couple of years ago. Last May when I was taking out my rails to have a bedliner sprayed in I noticed that my front rail (the one that took the most of the shock that day when the hitch slammed back) was CRACKED, one side all the way through the metal, in both places where the hitch tabs sit down in the rails (where the pins hold the hitch in). I think it was a disaster waiting to happen so please keep a very close eye on your rails. If you think about it that is a lot of stress/shock on the metal when it slams back like that. I don't mean to cause you worry but please keep an eye on it (in the years to come). Thanks for the heads up. My hitch is out right now, so I will go back and check my rails again!

RE: Has this happened to you?

The ripped me off the lawn tractor a few times. Still didn't spill my beer. Whoo, that was a close one!:B

RE: Oops, go back to sleep!

You should be able to just glance over your shoulder and know if it's slid and locked it by the position of the lever. I thought so too, but it was dark and only my 13 yr old daughter was with me. (wife & son following up bringing up boat) I "thought" I felt it slide and got out and moved the handle forward and thought it was locked in, but no. Had a TT before and this is our first fiver but we learn something every trip and take notes. I'm sure we still got more to learn.:h

RE: Oops, go back to sleep!

We've only had a fiver for 5 mos, and still have a lot to learn. Last trip to lake I tried to slide hitch back on a small forward decline. Prodigy held fiver, but when I would get out to lock in, it would slide back to the front. After 3 attempts I got DW to come and lock it in. Live and learn I guess.

Oops, go back to sleep!

Heading to the lake a few weeks ago, and arriving after dark I decided to slide my hitch back "just in case" @ the ranger station. My brake controller was getting flaky (have replaced with a prodigy) but I thought it had slid and locked. WRONG! As I started up a steep hill, BAM! My daughter jumped and said "what was that"? Everyone around was coming out of their RVs to see what that wreck was.:o I knew so I just kept going to the site. Something else to add to my double check list! Have inspected hitch and it appears to be OK.

RE: Gas/Electric water heater

Thanks PaulandTammy, I found it! It is in the outside access cover. A small black on/off rocker switch in the lower left hand corner, beside a warning not to turn on without water in HW tank. Gotta get down pretty low to see it. Thanks to all.........

RE: Gas/Electric water heater

Remove the water heater vent/cover on the outside and there will probably be a small black toggle switch marked on/off. Just be sure to turn it off when your water heater is not full of water and you have power going to the heater. I looked there also because I "thought" thats where it was. But I was also fighting a wasp.:E I'm gonna grab my flashlight and take another look!

Gas/Electric water heater

We carried our 07 Cherokee 285b+ out a couple of weeks ago for the second time. Wife wanted the water heater on to wash dishes. It has a switch by the front door to turn in on gas, but I can't find the switch for electric. We were @ a camp ground and didn't really want to use gas. I looked on the heater (under sink) and the owners man is no help! Any ideas where it might be? Tech did a walk around with me, but I forget.:S

RE: Trailer level

"Quote" When mounting the level for front-to-back, be sure you put it where you can see it as you raise and lower your landing gear. The first 5er I had, I mounted the level where I couldn't see it and reach the switch at the same time. **DUHHHHH** I glad you mentioned that!

RE: Trailer level

Well I think I'm gonna put it on there. May have to hook up and find a level spot because where I park it probably is perfectly level. I will put a small one on the side for front to back. Next weekend will be our first trip out with this RV. Thanks for everyones input.

Trailer level

I picked up our new (to us) Cherokee 5th wheel about a month ago. As they were putting my hitch in the service manager says "I'm gonna give you something". He gave me a level master trailer level by Wheel Masters mounted on a home made bracket. He said to mount it on pin box using a square so you can see it in the rear view mirror when backing up. The thing is about 12" long. Are these any good? Does the RV need to be perfectly level when installing? Any damage to pin box? Any tips on installing this thing? Thanks

RE: Sold My 5th Wheel today, Diesel to High and Truck is next

We just traded or TT for a fiver a couple of weeks ago for under 16k. We have 2 children that love to camp and enjoy boating. Truck is almost paid for. We can get 2 days of tubing/skiing on one tank of fuel in the boat @ about the same cost of the four of us eating out at a nice restuarant. So we don't eat out as much. Living in AR we have plenty of lakes within 100 mi to choose from. Wife and I both work hard to enjoy these things and really like to get away for a week or weekend when we can. We have had to make adjustments, but for us it is worth it for the memories and time spent with our children. Not bashing those who are getting out, just glad I don't have to yet.

RE: Forest River Cherokee

Well the concensis is that it should be ok for the price. Soooooo, I'm scheduled for 9 am Fri to have the hitch put in and pick up my new (to me) RV. I'm starting to get pretty excited now. Thanks to all who gave me encouragement. Hope to see ya on the road some day.

RE: Forest River Cherokee

Bluhorn, I hear ya. My son is 16 and we go to the family farm and set up camp and deer hunt together. He will be a Sr next yr and soon going to college. My daughter is 14 and loves to tube. During the summer we spend time @ the lake tubing and "trying" to ski. We have a Larson F/S that my wife pulls while I pull the RV. When its too cold to play in the water, we fish. I have never pulled our current RV over 100 mi from home, but this one I might even go to a couple of NASCAR races with. I appriciate everyone response on this. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger tomorrow!

RE: Forest River Cherokee

Our Forest River is the Salem model. Can't get to the bathroom or up to the sleep area with the slide in. Well, have put off decision till Mon. Everybody's waiting on me. Financing is ready and ins co. said "just let us know". Wife said "do it or shut up".:p I was wondering about getting to the bedroom/toilet, and loading the fridge with the slide in. I've been told that the slides are 12v. Is there a way to do it manually? I'm new to this fiver/slide deal. "Right now" I'm thinking I'll call Mon and say DO IT. Can someone talk me out of it? Thanks for everyone's input.

RE: Forest River Cherokee

Well right now I'm setting here trying to justify buying it. I already have my CU approval so all I have to do is say ok. We camp 2 full wks a yr plus about 6 other weekends (work shift work, only off 1 wk end a mnt). Also carry it to the deercamp for a month. Every thing works on ours and it is paid for! I guess I getting cold feet about going in to debt. What to do............

RE: Forest River Cherokee

Thanks for the replies. We have a 14 and 16 yr old and have been camping for about 5 yrs. The TT has no slides and its starting to get crowded. Plus they want to take friends too. I really like this 5th. Dealer says it weights #8900 and sleeps 8. TV is a 04, 2500 Cummins powered, 4x4 Ram so I think I'll be ok there. I guess I'll decide this am to buy or not. Thanks.......
